AeA ranks Atlanta 10th-largest U.S. cybercity

Atlanta, July 2008 - Atlanta is the Southeast's largest cybercity and the nation's 10th largest by high-tech employment, according to technology trade association report.

 

The AeA's "Cybercities 2008: An Overview of the High-Technology Industry in the Nation's Top 60 Cities," report shows Atlanta's tech employment grew from 124,300 jobs in 2005 to 126,700 jobs in 2006, the most recent year of data available.

 

Atlanta added about 2,400 high-tech jobs in 2006, growth of 1.9 percent, after five straight years of job losses. The city lost 25 high-tech establishments from 2005 to 2006, ending with 7,893.

 

Atlanta ranked third nationally by telecommunications services employment with 35,400 jobs, third by software publishing employment at 10,400 jobs and fifth in Internet services jobs at 13,200. Atlanta's high-tech industry was dominated by high-tech services, with only nine percent of its workforce employed in electronics manufacturing. Communications services employed 38 percent of Atlanta's tech workers, while software services employed 34 percent.

 

Atlanta ranked 19th in the United States and second in the Southeast for high-tech wages with an average of $82,372, which marked a 2 percent increase over $80,722 in 2005. The U.S. average high-tech wage in 2006 was $79,484.

 

AeA is the nation's largest technology trade association, which represents all segments of the high-tech industry.
